Nehemiah's first week of school..

Last week, we all started our schoolyear. Nehemiah is doing preschool this year. Thought I'd share a few highlights of his first week..
Tracing (pre-writing)

We're reading stories each week on animals for science.

He learned to trace his hand! He did this all by himself! :)

His new "thing" is drawing on white paper. We now need a "white paper" fund in our budget! :) I have to limit his number each day. Anyhow, these were some monsters he drew..too cute!

And, this was where he learned HOW to draw his hand. :)

One Thousand Gifts....Tuesday

holy experience

So..my "One Thousand Gifts" post is 'technically' a 'Monday post,' but since I didn't have the time yesterday, I'm sure I'm still allowed to be thankful on a Tuesday! :) So, to add to the list......

"It is good to give thanks to the Lord..." Ps. 92:1

Haircut...Before and After

Do you see the boy, happy and blissful in his curly-headed beauty? (the orange spot on his left nostril is from putting an orange peanut m&m up his nose! As proud as we were of his new "skill", we quickly discouraged that!) Well, daddy was not so happy about boy's bouncy curls...saying he looked like a "girl"...so.....
...out came the scissors and trimmers...and, this is what happened (remember who's idea this was?)...
...and this was the result! Handsome boy? Yes. Happy boy? No. :) He actually told me the next day that he was "just teasing me" with his tears. :)
By the next day he liked his hair. Daddy told him he was "handsome like Peyton Manning." :)

One Thousand Gifts

holy experience

I just read a lovely article over at "A Holy Experience." It's a blog a friend here, Robyn, told me about. I have been blessed by what I've read. But, I read this article on starting a 1000 Gifts List, and it reminded me of the blessings journal I started here so long ago. I have also been reading "Choosing Gratitude" by Nancy Leigh DeMoss, and this idea goes along so well with what I've been reading in her book.

Over at "A Holy Experience", Anne Voskamp talks about starting a list of 1000 gifts you are thankful for. Not gifts you want, but gifts you have. The everyday things. And, I thought it would be great to pick up my blessings journal by starting this list. Maybe it will help keep me blogging, too. Especially, because lately I have been thinking of so much God has given me that I'm thankful for.

Anne wrote in her blog post, "It is happening to me as John Milton wrote: "Gratitude bestows reverence, allowing us to encounter everyday epiphanies, those transcendent moments of awe that change forever how we experience life and the world."

Before I start my list, I'll leave you with one last encouragement from Anne...."Father, You are the Giver of all Good Gifts. They are everywhere. I can hardly jot them down fast enough. How You love.~~Will you too begin your list of a Thousand Gifts? It will change your life. Guaranteed."

(By the way, she does hers on a Monday...so I'm just getting a head start here!) :)

1. the lovely orchid on my side table in my living room..a gift from our church staff

2. the gorgeous flowers on my table..a gift from the love of my life

3. a bowl full of homegrown tomatoes from my sister

4. another bowl full of garden fresh squash from Sara

5. two computer desks and two bookshelves for a total of $5 (we needed those when we came to IN and prayed, and God provided-again!)

6. this lovely lake house that we could never afford if we didn't have "kingdom-minded" landlords

7. our screened in porch and quiet nights

8. free lakes/beaches for the kids to swim

9. three nights of wonderful meals when we moved here two weeks ago from lovely church members, which gave us time to get settled

10. an amazing church to be a part of

11. money in the bank and a kitchen pantry and fridge full of food

12. peace that passes all understanding

13. that I get to see my dear friend Elizabeth tomorrow and meet her new baby girl

14. that I get the choice to school my kids at home, and get this time with them that I will never regret

15. for a pile of laundry...which means I have a family to take care of

16. for a son who tells me all day long how beautiful I look :)

17. for a "free walking track" around our lovely "island"

18. the God-given ability to create art

19. coupons and my dear friends, Sarah and Mandy, who changed my way of shopping and helped me to cut our food bill in half :)

20. Kate letting me borrow her glue gun til I can get mine from our house in KY.

21. my sweet sister, who watched our kids last night so we could go out

22. my parents, who are always helping us out however they can

23. parents who led me to Christ

24. a husband who follows God wherever He leads..even when it doesn't make sense to others around us

25. Kerry doing so much work on our cars before we left KY, and the discounts he gave us, because he, too, is kingdom-minded

(and that's just a start).....

Update!

(right around the corner from where we live!)

This is for you, Elizabeth, since I think you're the only one who is patient enough to keep coming back and seeing if I've updated my blog in five months or not! So...oh well for my "new resolution to keep my blog up better!" ha!

We have gone through alot of changes and have recently moved from the hills of Kentucky to good ol' Indiana! In 13 years, it looks like we have come full circle...Indiana, California, Kentucky, and back to Indiana. :) We're so happy to be here, though. It had been something we had prayed about off and on for our whole marriage, and never reallly new why we were drawn to this area. But, now we know. God is sovereign and had a sovereign plan for us to be here. Shane is now the Children's Ministry Director at Christ's Covenant Church in Winona Lake, Indiana.

In our two and a half short weeks here, we have been so blessed and in awe of the Lord. The people here in this town and at our church are amazing. We came, sight unseen, to our rental home-as our home in Kentucky has not yet sold. And, this house is just what we would have picked. Probably better than what we would have gotten on our budget, but our landlords are kindgom-minded and are helping us out. What a blessing to be part of God's family! :)

We live 200 yards from the lake, in the cutest town. It's one of those "nobody locks their doors" kind of town. We walk almost daily, the kids ride their bikes to the park or the beach or just around the "island" where we live. We could not have asked for anything better.

We are so thankful for our time in Kentucky. Our seven years spent there made it become home to us. We were able to meet so many wonderful people and I left with some of the greatest friendships of my life. We were always blessed with wonderful neighbors (Seminary, Cedarmore, and Frankfort), who we will miss terribly. But, we are just thankful for each and every moment God gave us there and all He taught us, knowing is was all just preparation for this step of our lives.

(more to come...no promises when, though!) :) ha!

Some of my new favorite cooking/healthy eating blogs

I've been doing alot of reading lately...maybe too much reading at times! :) I love to cook, and I love to cook healthy for my family. In my search to save money, if you've been following my "coupon posts", I just wasn't still happy with how we were eating, feeling like we were eating too many processed foods than what we'd like. So,we've gone back to trying to eat more like we used to (those of you from Cedarmore remember our Kefir smoothies!), and yet still stay in our new budget (which I'll remind you is HALF what we used to spend only 5 months ago!)

It's been challenging, and at times overwhelming and frustrating, but God (and Shane!) are helping me find a good balance. Anyhow, here are some great blogs I've been enjoying. Many of them have good articles on eating healthy on a budget, too. And, by the way, we prefer traditional foods (you know, like great-grandma would have eaten!). :) So, some of this info might challenge what you've believed or thought before. However, in whatever we do, however we choose to eat, we know that it needs to all be to the glory of God. I am not trying to say that I believe this is the only way we can eat and glorify God, please hear that! :) I still like to occasionally eat girl scout cookies, too! :) However, we're trying, and this is how we feel best about feeding our family.

Snow Day (part two #2)..more playing!

My neighbor's little girl..the youngest of four..the only girl! She's little, but she's tough! :)

I looked out and saw Lizzie making a snow angel! I loved the contrast of her pink coat against the dreary day! :)

A view from inside my front door! Remind me to wash that window! :)

I don't know if you can tell, but Myra is "brushing the snow" off Lizzie with a broom! It was very cute.

Break for hot cocoa on the front porch! :)

Snow Day (part two..playing!)

It's not that often that we get "good" snow here in Kentucky, so we like to take advantage when we do! The neighbors were off school, and came over to play..and we love them! :) We have such great neighbors here..we feel very blessed. So, join us for a few images of playing in the snow!
My baby boy..:)...
My beautiful 10 year old!

A view from my kitchen window..yes, I'm a wuss, most of these were taken from the window or front door view! Too cold for mama out there! :)

This one makes me smile! :)

My adorable 7 year old! :) What blessings these kids are and how much fun they had! :)

My View on Life

A couple of weeks ago, I was on my ellyptical machine (that we got for free!), and I was looking down thinking how cute my son looked playing on the floor! So, I got the idea to take pictures of my life from my view on the ellyptical! And, yes, I finished exercising when I was done photographing! :)

I looked over and saw this view of my daughter taking her temperature. Unfortunately, she ended up having pneumonia! I kept trying to "cure" her with fish oil and vitamin C! :) She's all better now, thanks to some antibiotics! :)

As I began to exercise again, I saw Shane teaching Nehemiah how to "play football!"
As you can see, he's still learning how to catch the ball! :) At this stage in his life, he has my skill for playing sports! :) (this picture is my favorite!) hee,hee....

What Do We Do on Snow Days? (part one-hobbies)

I walked into the living room and Myra was watching "Little House on the Prarie" while crocheting! :) That's my girl!
Here's what she crocheted! The world's longest chain! Ha! I think it's time we move on to a "single crochet" since she seems to have this down! :) No idea what we'll do with this. :)

Snow Day! (pancakes for breakfast)

Well, it was a snow day today! The first "real" (accumulative) snow of the season. The schools were off, and so were we! The kids wanted chocolate chip pancakes for breakfast, and I said, "why not?!" Lizzie asked me to use my pancake pan that my sister in law got me last year from Crate and Barrel (which I've only used twice? before). The kids were happy, the pancakes were great (Buttermilk Pancakes, recipe from "Dining on A Dime" cookbook-added chocolate chips), and it was a good start to a good day!

This pan is so cute..it makes "christmas" designs on the pancakes. I know-Christmas is over! But, it's still winter. :)

He looks a little distressed, doesn't he? :)

Yummy!

I think she's pretty pleased. :)

And, the leftovers are "flash-frozen" on a sheet pan to be enjoyed another day!

HAHAHAHAHAAAA!!!!!

Shane and I first saw this recently on the Purgatorio website and laughed so hard we cried! We can't stop singing it (unfortunately?)...enjoy! :)

Making Cookies With Daddy! (part two)

Okay, so I have to admit, the icing did not turn out to be the "best" icing recipe I've ever followed. I have this tendency to like to try new recipes..anyhow I'm getting off on a side road here...this is Shane's cookie creation! We named him "Mr. Bill" and had a great laugh! I am sorry to admit it was the icing more than the "decorator." I'm sure he'd do a great job with better icing, right???? :)

In an effort to save money this year, I tried not to buy a bunch of decorating stuff, and just go with what we had...thus the NEON cookies! :)

Hee, hee! We had to PRESS the decorations into the icing, because the icing was not so sticky. Oh, well, it gave us a good laugh! And, you know, they tasted JUST fine! :)

Making Cookies With Daddy! (part one)

This year, we talked daddy into making Christmas cookies with us, and we had so much fun! He even got to use a hand mixer for the first time in his life, of which he was admittedly a little scared! :) We had a great time, made a great big mess, and made some great memories! :)

Yes, this is our boy "spinning in his apron!" I kind of think it might be time to make him a "man-apron!" It WAS my great-grandmother's, if that helps at all? Probably not! :) ha!

Life With 2 Older Sisters

So, this is what happens when you have two older sisters, who are homeschooled and happen to be studying American History, while you are only 3 years old with no say in the matter! :) I'm sure one day he'll laugh...:)....

Happy New Years!

Well, I want to extend a "Happy New Years" to all of you. I can't believe another year has flown by us. As I think back on this past year, I have many emotions...mostly I am so thankful for God's grace, thankful for how we've grown in our walk with Him, thankful for all of His provisions, thankful for overall health for our family, and I'm looking forward to what this year has in store.

On the blog end, I was not so "dedicated" this year. Part of that was the fact that I started working this year for the first time since I had kids. It was a very busy year, in that aspect, and as we are thankful to God for providing so much work for me, we are looking forward to a bit calmer of a year, in this area. This year, God-willing, I will be working as an associate photographer for DeannaKaye Photography in Louisville. This will change things alot, but mostly it will provide a way for me to still work, still doing photography, but not having to bring my work home. It will free up a lot more time to be "home" when I'm home, if that makes sense. We thank God for this open door for me. And, although it has been a lot of thought about the struggle of giving up control of the editing, pricing, etc...we know this will be better for our family.

So, because of that, I'm hoping to have more time to do things I've missed doing this year, like blogging. Now, this is no "New Years' Resolution"..I know better! I'm sure it might come and go with the seasons of this next year. But, I have some ideas! :) I was thinking back, and one of the posts I still get alot of comments on was the "photo" sneak peek into my world I did...just pictures of everyday life here, from a creative view. It was fun for me, and fun for many of you. So, that's where I'd like to go more often this year...using my photography to tell "our" story. We'll see! :)

As I look ahead to this New Year, I know God's hands are guiding us and leading us, and so I know I can rest. I know there will be hills and valleys, but I know God has ordained each and every one of them, so we can trust Him for what lies ahead. Life is an adventure. Our walk with God is an adventure. Lead on, God, we will follow. :)

So, I have been more than thrilled with shopping this new way. (for more information, go to http://www.moneysavingmom.com/ ) I'm still sticking to 50% of my old grocery budget. I'd like to get it down even more, but am going to do this several months before moving on! :) My goal is to not buy most things anymore unless I can get them at least 50% off regular price (excluding veggies and fruits)..even then, I'm only buying weekly what's on sale in those departments. I'm almost to the point where I don't even hardly go to Wal-Mart, which I never would have said before, because I just can't save as much there. I do still go and price match when it's worth it, and if toiletries aren't on sale, Wal-Mart is still the best deal on most of those things. It is taking me a bit more time preparing and at the grocery store, but it has been so worth it for us! :)

Catch up on grocery deals!

Well, once again, I've been gone for awhile. So much to catch up on, but I'm going to start with catching up on my grocery deals, since I know a few of you keep up with me on them! :)
